Sociology Grad School Guide for Undocumented Students

Reviewing the Law

Our Idea

After presenting at the "DACA at the 10" panel at the American Sociological Association in 2022, I met Jozef C. Robles (UC Irvine) and we began talking about our shared experiences as formerly undocumented college and graduate students. Upon reflecting on how lonely, uninformed, and difficult our journeys to go from undergraduate students in sociology to graduate sociology programs as undocumented and DACA students, we realized that there was a need for resources to pursue graduate education that are specific to sociology.

While there are a number of resources on access to graduate school, no single resource focuses exclusively on access to sociology programs. We are in the early stages of this project and welcome potential collaborators, advisors, funders, and/or information, if such a guide already exists. We are interested in hearing from undocumented/DACA graduate students who have navigated access to sociology graduate programs themselves in various states, particularly in states that do not offer in-state tuition and/or financial aid to undocumented/DACA students.
